Payment operates in the usual way - cashless system.  This is a biometric system which keeps the source of the funds anonymous.

Free School Meal pupils are entitled to an additional credit of £1.30, for use only at breakfast.  They will also receive their existing, £2.50, lunchtime allowance per day.
