Business - BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate

Business Business BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate Miss King Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate

This is a one year full time course that provides the opportunity for students to explore the world of business in a highly practical way.  By adopting an investigative approach, students develop a range of skills while discovering the problems and opportunities faced by businesses.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to study on this course should achieve at least a Grade 3 in English and Maths and a good range of GCSE 3/4 grades.  The nature of the course requires students to develop skills as independent learners; therefore, high levels of motivation and attendance are essential.

The aim of the course is to encourage investigation and to support a highly active, student centred approach.  The course is assessed through a combination of coursework examinations and consequently it requires students to be committed and apply themselves at all times.

The course involves a comprehensive overview of all business functions and the emphasis is placed on realistic business contexts.  It enables students to develop an understanding of how various business functions such as finance, human and physical resources work together as part of a cohesive business.

The course involves students obtaining a minimum of 120 credits.  Each unit of study carries 10 credits.  As the course is equivalent to 3 GCSEs, the content covers different areas of business in more depth than GCSE Business Studies.

The units studied are listed below:

  • Enterprise in the Business World
  • Finance for Business * (Externally assessed - on screen exam)
  • Promoting a Brand
  • Principles of Customer Service
  • Sales and Personal Selling
  • Providing Business Support
  • Recruitment, Selection and Employment
  • Principles of Marketing * (Externally assessed – paper based exam)
  • Building successful teams
  • Introducing Law and Consumer Rights
  • Financial Planning and Forecasting

There are two external examinations within this unit.  One is computer based and the other is paper based.  The remaining 10 units are assessed through coursework that is then standardised by the examination board.

Progression and Careers

A BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate is equivalent to 3 GCSEs grades A*-C and can be combined with retaking GCSE English and/or Mathematics.  This course gives students a wide choice of progression options into further study, training or relevant employment in the business sector.  A distinction grade or merit with at least three distinction grade assignments, coupled with good reports and a teacher recommendation, will allow students to access the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business and additional A level courses.
