Key Stage 3

In Years 7-9 students study a broad and relevant curriculum, including the National Curriculum.  This gives them the opportunity to study a wide range of subjects and enjoy many differing learning experiences prior to having to focus on a more tailored curriculum at GCSE level.

The curriculum has been designed to be responsive to the needs of individual students, enabling them to get a secure grounding in the basics of literacy and numeracy, where necessary, if they find learning more difficult.

In KS3, all students study Art, Computer Science, Dance, Drama, Design and Technology, English, Food Technology, Geography, History, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Science and Textiles. The vast majority of our students will also study Modern Foreign Languages (French or Spanish).  These subjects are taught in a mix of groupings, some according to ability and some mixed ability. Learning for Life is also taught to students in Tutor Groups on a rotation across the timetable.

For more in depth information about how best to support your child and how they can achieve their potential in each individual subject this academic year, please read our Year Ahead Booklet.

During Year 9, students being to plan their individual GCSE curriculum.  This is done within the Learning for Life programme, by studying the Options Booklet and through attending the Year 9 Options Evening in the Spring Term.

When students transfer to secondary, we record their prior attainment at Key Stage 2 in Primary School, and use this information to set an aspirational target grade for the end of Year 11.  Students will work towards their target grade from Years 7 to 11 where their progress will be closely monitored on an individual ‘Progress Path’. We are able to track students’ progress to determine if they are working on, below or above their target grade. Appropriate intervention is designed to ensure that all our students make the necessary progress in line with their target grade.  Assessment and Effort data is reported to parents/ carers every term.
