Key Stage 4
In years 10-11 students will continue to study a core curriculum that includes English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Combined Science. All students will take GCSEs in the core curriculum subjects, but in addition, students will have lessons in Physical Education, Religious Studies and Learning for Life (Citizenship) which are non-examinable.
In addition to the core, students will be able to choose four other subjects that help them to tailor their GCSE curriculum towards their individual aspirations, aptitudes and abilities. Within the choices that are available, there will be a strong emphasis on following an academic route of study that includes a Humanities subject (Geography & History) and a Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish) as this will help to put them on a path towards more academic A Levels and securing places at the prestigious Russell Group Universities.
The options choices that are usually available at Key Stage 4 are Art, Business Studies (BTec and GCSE), Computer Studies, Dance, Design Technology, Drama, Food and Nutrition, French, Geography, German, Health and Social Care, History, Media Studies, Music, Photography, Religious Education, Spanish, Sports Science (GCSE PE), Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics as an alternative to Combined Science), and Textiles. Options blocks will be arranged to fit the preferences of the highest number of students, however, it must be noted that it is not possible to meet all combinations of options choices.
At Key Stage 4, students continue to study the Learning for Life programme once every two weeks on a rotation taught by the Form Tutor or another member of the pastoral team. Increasingly, visiting speakers, outside and in-house performances also contribute to the delivery of the subject. The aims of the programme are academic, social and personal and include:
- Careers education, interview skills and work experience
- First Aid
- Global issues and Human Rights
- Government and Parliament
- Post 16 options
- Sexual and Relationships education
Students continue to be assessed on their flightpath towards achieving an Expected Progress Grade (EPG) which is an aspirational target based on their entry point at the school (Key Stage 2 results). Students will receive an update on their progress seven times during the course of Years 10 and 11. Parents will have the opportunity to discuss progress at the Parents Consultation Evenings which are calendared towards the beginning of the academic year.
