Year 12:

Autumn Term: ‘Doctor Faustus’ (Christopher Marlowe) and ‘Poems of the Decade’ anthology

Spring Term: ‘Beloved’ (Toni Morrison) and ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ (Oscar Wilde)

Summer Term: ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ (Khaled Hosseini) and ‘The Bell Jar’ (Sylvia Plath) – Coursework: 2,500-3000 words (20% of A Level)

 

Year 13:

Autumn Term: ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ (Khaled Hosseini) and ‘The Bell Jar’ (Sylvia Plath) – Coursework: 2,500-3000 words (20% of A Level)

Spring Term: ‘Othello’ (William Shakespeare) and Selected poems by Christina Rossetti

Summer term: Reappraising texts from Year 12

 

Assessment

 

Year 12 – Open text. Two exams that assess students’ knowledge on the following texts: one exam comparing ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde with ‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison, and another exam that focuses on exploring ‘Doctor Faustus’ and a wide selection of poetry.

 

Year 13 – Open text.

Drama: (2 hour 15 minute) – 30%

Prose: (1 hour) – 20%

Poetry: (2 hour 15 minute) – 30%

Coursework (20% of A Level): Comparing the presentation of women in ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ (Khaled Hosseini) and ‘The Bell Jar’ (Sylvia Plath)

With two teachers, students receive a wide range of techniques and theories to apply to their studying of the range of texts on offer. The skills learned on this course can be the foundation to a plethora of careers and a variety of courses. Of course, a love for English literature and a passion for reading are essential in order to achieve highly over the course of two years.
