Bursaries & Scholarships

The Bishopshalt Scholarship Programme was established to provide direct support to students to apply to the most prestigious University and Apprenticeship programs.  This scholarship, financed by contributions from the school and community, is awarded to students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, subject excellence, and a strong academic record.
Students can apply for two possible scholarship programmes:

  • Academic scholarships
  • Performance-based scholarships

In addition to our scholarships, students have two further options for financial support to help overcome barriers and succeed in their chosen field:

  • Cecil De Salis Fund
  • Sixth Form 16–19 Bursary Fund

Complete information about the available scholarships and funding, including eligibility criteria and application procedures, can be found in the sections below.

Cecil De Salis Award

The Cecil de Salis Scholarship Trust Fund was bequeathed to Bishopshalt School by Sir Cecil de Salis K.C.B., a former Chairman of Governors, friend and benefactor of Bishopshalt School.

The terms of the Trust deeds state that the income arising from the fund will be used to award discretionary scholarships to former students of Bishopshalt School who hold a place at a university or equivalent institution.

Please see the following documents for full criteria details and to apply:

Applicants should note that the award cannot be applied for until you have commenced your studies at University or other applicable training institutions.

You will be required to submit a letter from your university/training institution confirming your attendance; offer letters will not be accepted as verification.

Performance Based Scholarships

Performance-based scholarships are awarded to those who have exceptional ability in an extracurricular activity, such as sports, music, or performing arts like dance or drama.  You don’t have to study the related subject, however, you may be expected to take on certain roles or responsibilities, such as playing in the school team, showcasing your talent or performing at events in school.

There may be an audition stage to apply, or you may have to provide other evidence of your abilities such as a video of you performing, a portfolio, or a statement from an appropriate individual. Sporting applicants should already be competing at borough, regional, or national level. The scholarship offers tailored support to help students excel both on and off the field.

Scholarships will be awarded to 2 students in each of the following two areas:

Athletic Performance (Individual and Team Sports)

The Athletic Performance scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated exceptional skill, discipline, and competitive success in their chosen sport—whether in individual disciplines such as athletics, swimming, or martial arts, or in team sports like football, rugby, or netball. This scholarship supports students striving to compete at the highest levels while promoting leadership, resilience, and a strong commitment to both sport and academic life.

Creative and Performing Arts (Music, Drama, Dance, and Art)

Awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional skill and creative expression in the arts. This may include music performance or composition, dramatic acting or directing, dance, or visual arts. Students are expected to contribute actively to the school’s cultural life and are supported in developing their practice through performance opportunities, showcases, competitions, and specialist mentorship.

Academic Scholarships

Subject-specific scholarships are designed for students with a strong passion and proven ability in a particular academic subject. They recognise exceptional talent, interest, and achievement within a field of study. Eligibility is based on your demonstrated interest, subject-specific skills, and academic excellence—particularly in Years 11 and 12.

As part of the application process, you may be asked to complete a subject-related task or project. This could include giving a presentation, submitting a portfolio of work, or engaging in another activity that showcases your ability in the subject.

In addition, you will be required to submit a financial plan outlining how you intend to use the scholarship to support your academic development—for example, to fund materials, attend subject-related events, or access additional learning opportunities.

Scholarship benefits are personalised to support your specific subject area and academic goals. These may include interview preparation, university visits, supra-curricular opportunities, access to an academic mentor, guidance for academic competitions, and support with entry examinations. Additional resources may also be provided, depending on the requirements of your chosen course.
These scholarships are intended to support your journey into a chosen field and help you excel at a national or even global level.
